The origins of OpenBB

OpenBB started as a side project that Didier built in his living room in London.

The goal was simple: create a tool that centralizes financial data and allows full control over investment research workflows.

What started as a Python-based personal project quickly gained traction when it was made open source. The project went viral, gaining significant attention on platforms like Reddit and Hacker News, and today, our open-source repository has nearly 30,000 stars on GitHub.

What is the OpenBB Platform?

The OpenBB Platform aggregates data from multiple vendors, standardizing the way data is accessed and processed. Initially focused on equity and crypto data, the Platform has expanded to include over 100 different data vendors, covering everything from fixed income to forex.

Its architecture allows users to access a vast range of financial data seamlessly and, since it’s open source, it can also help them build their finance projects.

The Platform also works as the data access layer that powers Terminal Pro, our enterprise product. This is how it works:

AI-powered financial analysis with Terminal Pro

As AI continues to evolve, we have put significant effort into integrating AI into our enterprise offering.

Terminal Pro was designed for teams of analysts seeking a customizable and AI-powered quantitative workflow within one single platform.

Besides its customizability, another big advantage of Terminal Pro is the ability to bring your own data.

Whether you have data stored in a data warehouse like Snowflake, MySQL, SQLite or you’ve built a custom backend, the OpenBB Terminal Pro can seamlessly integrate with it.

OpenBB Copilot

One of the highlights of Didier’s presentation was our AI Copilot, an AI-powered financial analyst who can access most of the data on Terminal Pro in real time and analyze it in seconds, simplifying complex tasks and saving users a lot of time.

The list of use cases is long, but here’s a few:

• Uncover potential trading signals

• Automate data gathering for regulatory compliance

• Extract insights from corporate disclosures

• Aggregating key metrics across production systems

• Automating the creation of text, charts, and graphs for reports

• Analyzing communications (unstructured) along with structured data

Ultimately, our AI copilot system allows for precise data retrieval and processing, making it easier for both humans and machines to interact with financial data.

Bring your own copilot

When talking with big firms and institutions we realized that there were trust issues with third-party AI vendors. Therefore, we had to enable these to integrate their large language models (LLMs) into our financial terminal - in a way that the data would be kept secure.

OpenBB Agent

Then in December 2023, our team built an open source financial analyst agent. Didier spoke about it at Open Core Summit and we wrote about it in this blog post: Creating an AI powered financial analyst.

This agent was heavily built on top of the open source platform, and the agent had access to all the data available through the platform. Here’s a refresher from our CEO on the OpenBB agent.

So, ultimately, we wanted to test if we could leverage Terminal Pro architecture to bring our open source financial agent.
